Albee's Kitchen, Campsie

Went to Campsie with my Mom and Bro for lunch. I decided to take her to Albee's Kitchen. Even though I have tried the one in Kingsford and the foods are pretty ordinary, but I have read so many reviews saying that Albee's in Campsie are different and they serve delicious Malaysian cuisine.

The place is pretty small but full of diners. I arrived around 1PM and we were seated at the end of the restaurant. I passed a couple of tables and saw the portion of the food that is humongous! We were so hungry that it didn't take too long for us to decide what we want :)

To start our meal, I ordered one of their famous Curry puff to share between us three. My mom didn't really like it cause it has that Malaysian Curry that is quite profound. Which I love! The fillings consist of mince chicken, sweet potatoes, carrots, beans, and boiled eggs. The pastry is flaky and light.. It's a good dish to takeaway for an arvo snack or a late supper :)
Karipap or Curry Puff $2.50
My mom was torn apart between ordering the thick soup flat rice noodle or the Char kuey teow and she ended up with the later. I must say, Albee's in Campsie serves a delicious, wok smoky char kuey teow! It hits every flavours what this dish should have. On top of that, the seafood is fresh and the noodle is perfectly cooked that it still has the chewiness! Not to mention the portion... It can literally feed 2 hungry people.

Char kuey Teow $10.50

My brother ordered the Nasi Lemak with Nam Yu Pork Ribs. Nam Yu is red fermented beancurd. The pork ribs are marinated in it, then dusted with flour and deep fried to crunchiness! The pork has some fat in it but it is so good and juicy. The sambal is not very spicy but it complemented the dish really well. The rice itself is called nasi lemak. Lemak means fat. This is because the rice has been cooked with coconut milk/cream which contains quite a percentage of fat and the aromatic comes from the Pandan leaves.
Nasi Lemak with nam Yu Pork ribs $12.50
For me, I was tempted with the food that the table behind me had. It was the Loh mee! A bowl of thick noodle in thickened soup served with eggs,  prawns, pork slices, crispy pork lard (yum!!) and vegetables. It is huge! The people behind me was sharing between the three of them and here I am, trying to eat it by myself ;p I ended up leaving it behind as I was tooooo full to finish everything. Oh, how I missed Mr.P right now as he usually is the black hole for foods ;P (hehehehe!)

Loh Mee $12.50
I also ordered the Ngoh Hiong or pork roll. It is some kind of a sausage filled with mince pork and seafood, rolled up in a bean curd sheet and deep fried. My mom and Bro didn't like it so in the end I have to eat half of it and take away the rest. The Ngoh Hiong itself has an acquired taste, it has a strong Chinese Five Spice note that may be offensive to some people like my Bro ;p

Ngoh Hiong 1 roll for $8.80
What I can concludes from my visit here are the taste and portion of the foods are totally different from the one in Kingsford, the food are portioned generously and the price is cheaper as well! I would recommend people to try Albee's in Campsie even though you live in Eastern Suburb ;p
Would definitely come back to try other yummy foods they have ^^

Garden Buffet - The Star, Pyrmont

Last Sunday was a wet one. I can't take my mom around the city as she hates the rain and it is troublesome to sightseeing in that weather. So I decided to take her to have lunch in The Star - Garden Buffet. I didn't expect the place to be so full on a Sunday. Apparently there were a couple of birthday celebrations happening, no wonder the place was pact of people.

Garden Buffet is one of my favourite buffet places in Sydney. Even though it is pricey, but paying a visit occasionally wouldn't hurt :) Garden Buffet serves a variety of different cuisines. Some dishes are fixed such as the Chinese and Italian cuisine as well the Roast meat and the other varies depending on the day. Sometimes they have Morrocon dishes, Indian Dishes and many others I couldn't think of.

This time when I visited, they have chicken porridge and also Tom yum Noodle soup :) And most importantly, they serve fresh prawns everyday. Sometimes I come here just because I am craving for their prawns, eaten with the creamy seafood sauce.. :)
The dessert here also varies to keep the place exciting. Lucky for us, that day, they have the chocolate fondue set up.. My sister was beaming with happiness to see the fondue and can't hardly wait to gulp it with marshmallow!

Round no1, I got a bit of everything, to start with is the fresh prawns with seafood salad and marinated mussels in tomato sauce. The I moved on to the Chinese dishes, I got the soy mussels which is uhmazing! fried noodles, Hainanese Chicken and Fried Tofu Crab..
Next is steamed fish fillet with cauliflower cooked in cumin and pine nuts which is another stand out dish, also slowcooked beef which is alright. Last but not least at the bottom right of the pic is from the Italian side, I got the fungi pizza, tried a bit of the pumpkin ravioli with Carbonara sauce and spagbol, can never resist spagbol!

To nearly end my meals, I got some salad. yeah I know, salad should be starter ;P But hey, there's nothing wrong with that ^^ Also tried a bit of the chicken tangine with wild oriental rice, Lamb tandoori which is yuummmmoooo and Osso Bucco (not my fav)... The soup of the day is potato and cauliflower soup but unfortunately, they are heavy handed with the onions that the whole soup got overpowered.

This is what the Tomyum Noodle soup looks like. The soup is pretty mild and herby, served with rice noodle, beansprouts and a couple of fish ball. And below is the chicken porridge. Didn't taste the porridge just stole it from my sis for the pic :p

And the dessert, I got the pistachio slice cake which I don't have a pic of it. But above is what Bebski got.. Strawberry panna cotta, passionfruit parfait, mango pudding which is delicious and fruity!

Yes the Gondos really know how to eat. We collect the food on our table and then we start diggin' :) And yes, I do need to work out hard to burn those calories off ;p

Always have a good time dining in Garden Buffet despite the crowd and sometimes the queue. The food is well presented, and when you're lucky, you can taste their amazing lamb cutlet which unfortunately I've only came across it once. The staff is attentive despite how crowd the place get. They always take your empty plates the minute you stand up from your seat to get the next one ^^

Until another time buffet ~~

A trip to Flemington...

Venturing the Suburb of Flemington. A compilation of 2 visits in this review. The first one was with my friends and the second one was with mom yesterday :) As she extends her stay in Sydney til next week and she has seen pretty much everything here, so I decided to take her to Flemington cause she loves Vietnamese pork chop and to shop in Sydney's Market for it's cheap fruits and veggies.

Pho Toan Thang
Our first stop is to have lunch in Pho Toan Thang which well known for their pho. We arrived at 12:30PM and there were a long queue already. Luckily, we only waited for 10mins :)

The place is quite small but the customer turnover is fast. I can hardly see anyone chit chatting, everyone is busy eating. Another sign that the foods are delicious that they don't have time to talk ;p

They serve both Vietnamese cuisine and Chinese cuisine. But of course, coming here this far, we'll order Vietnamese foods :)

For starter, we got the spring roll. I always loved Viet's spring roll. Especially the ones that My colleague's mom likes to make. The fillings consist of mince pork, mushrooms, vermicilli and carrot deep fried to a crispy golden brown rolls.
Spring Rolls 5 for $6.50
My mom ordered pork chop on tomato rice. The pork chop is lip-smackingly good! It has a thin layer of crispiness to it and juicy meat underneath. The tomato rice is depth with flavour and fried with eggs as well. The portion of the food is generous. It can feed 2 people! But my mom, as hungry as she is, managed to finish everything by herself :p

Pork Chop on Tomato Rice $10.50
For me, I got the crispy chicken instead of the pork chop. The chicken is crispy and juicy as well but for me, Tan Viet still serves the best crispy skin chicken. The best part of this dish is to dip the chicken in the nuoc cham sauce, let the the meat immersed in the sauce and don't forget to have the chopped spicy vietnamese chilli in it as well! yum~~
Crispy skin Chicken in Tomato Rice $10.50
Another dish that we ordered is the seafood flat rice noodle. It has a good smoky wok aroma but unfortunately it misses some salty and sweet punch for a stir fry flat rice noodle (which can be easily overcome with soy sauce and chopped chilli ;p). Apart from that, the seafood is fresh and cause we were so full that we ended up taking it home

Seafood flat rice noodle $13.50

We got out from the place at around 1:45PM and look at the queue!!!

It's pretty clear why the queue is worth the wait. Not only the food are well portioned and taste great but also the price is pretty cheap! What more can you ask... The service is fast and the staffs still have smiles on their faces unlike some other busy places.
Will definitely be back to try other dishes!!

A Photo of the Pho from my first visit :)

The Darikka's Bakehouse
First time I came to Flemington, near the train station, Darikka's bakehouse was the first shop to be seen. It was pretty busy during lunch and I saw people getting the rolls. As the purpose of our journey that day was for culinary along inner-west area, so we got the chicken roll / Banh mi to share among the four of us.

The bread is crispy on the outside and fluffy in the inside. It was pretty good even though it's not as good as Hongha's bread. The filling is not too much as well, which was good thing so it was easier for us to eat while standing.

Happy Snack Cafe House
Another place that we came across is a small cheerful cafe located across the train station. There were a lot of people when we arrived for an arvo snack. Most of them got banh mi and the iced coffee and that's exactly what we got.

Cause we tried the chicken banh mi from Darikka's, its time for the pork banh mi! The iced coffee is great but unfortunately the banh mi did not deliver. It was okay but not great ...

Will come back here again to try other dishes! They have a

Sydney's Market, Flemington

Fruits and Veggies sold in bulk ! Can't believe we got a box of orange for only $10 and a box of sweetpotato for only $3! The prices get cheaper and cheaper throughout the evening. They started shouting about prices and their goods to get customer's attention as they sell similar type of fruits and veggies.

Inside the market, you can find a number of Doner kebab trucks selling wraps, shish kebabs, corn dogs, Gozleme and others.

Even though we had lunch before, the temptation of hot chewy cheesy gozleme is irrestisible that I ended up getting a box of the chicken, mushroom and cheese! The kebab wraps looks good as well.... maybe next time.....

Gozleme $5
Apart from the perishable goods, in the market, there are also some other things such as the watch repairer place, Nuts & Crackers and also household needs. In addition, they also sell fresh seafood here.

The Stuff that we got! Cheap price leads to impulse buying.. I hope we can finish those sweet potatoes before it gets spoiled.

That's pretty much the end of our Flemington visit.. Eat, Eat and Eat ^^

Easy Chocolate Brownies

An easy chocolate brownies recipe that I've used for years now.. A crowd pleaser and so quick to make. All you need is a good chocolate quality and a good cocoa powder. I know my chocolate is not of the best quality, but the cocoa powder that I used is definitely of high grade :)

  • 200g Unsalted Butter
  • 150g Dark Chocolate
  • 100g Milk Chocolate
  • 1 Cup Brown Sugar
  • 3/4 cup Plain Flour
  • 2 Tbsp Cocoa Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Baking powder
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla essence
  • 90g Chopped walnut

Methods:
1. Placed the Chocolates, Butter and Sugar in a Bain-Marie (Forgot to take pic, sorry!)
2. While waiting for everything above to melt, sieve the plain flour, cocoa powder and baking powder.

3. And also chopped up the walnuts

4. After everything melted, let it cool down for atleast 3-4mins before putting in the eggs one by one.

5. After everything is mixed well, pour in the dry ingredients and also the walnuts and vanilla essence. Mix well then pour into the prepared pan.

6. Baked for 35-40mins at 180oC

Brocolli & Potato Soup

Nothing better than a warm soup to welcome the winter season. It was a cold day three weeks ago that I decided to make a heart warming soup for dinner. As I made sweet potato soup many times, I would like to try something different and Brocolli was on sale in Coles so that's my sign to make it.

Ingredients:

  • 1 Medium Broccoli Floret
  • 2 Medium Potato
  • 1 Carrot
  • 1 tsp Chicken powder
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • Mushrooms to liking (pan fried with a bit of salt)
Methods:
1. Boil the Brocolli in 1 L of water. Close the pan with lid to minimize evaporation

2. Chopped up the potato and carrot roughly to fastened the boiling process.

3. Diced finely 3-4cm carrot for garnish and diced half one of the potatoes into small cube.

4. When you can cut through the broccoli easily, drain it immediately in cold water and used the broccoli water to boil the carrot and potato. This is the base of the soup.

5. While waiting for the potato and carrot to boil, in another pan, Fry the cubed potatoes til golden brown

6. Set aside in towel paper to drain excess oil

7. After the potato and carrot cooked, put in the broccoli. Seasoned with salt pepper and the chicken powder

8. Blend with hand mixer and let it boil further for another 3-4mins before tasting.

9. Dont forget the potato, carrot and mushroom garnish on top..Serve with toasted sourdough while still warm :)
